Sober, Focused and Complete in 2013

Dr. Scott had stopped by the bar before heading home.  It was the end of the week and he wanted a little down time before he returned.  He had six children and the house was always busy and loud.  He wanted a few quiet minutes to take the edge off.  The first drink slid down easily and he thought, “I will have another.”  He motioned to the bartender to set him up again . . . and yet again.  He relaxed, paid his bill and left.  He felt a bit light-headed but home was only a few blocks away.

He got in the car.  It responded to the turn of the key and he put the car in gear and headed for home.  Pulling into the driveway, he noticed that the door was opened and all the lights were on.  He jumped out of the car and ran to the front door.  Inside he found his wife was sitting on the floor holding their youngest and weeping.  He tried to clear his head.  That last drink had scrambled things.  What was going on?

“Honey?” he said. “What is wrong?”  Vera looked up, with tears streaming down her face, “Mandy was playing with the big kids tiny figure toys and must have swallowed one.  She isn’t breathing and I don’t know what to do.  I called 911 and they are on the way.”

Dr. Scott again shook his head and began to sober up.  He dropped to his knees and took Mandy and laid her on the floor.  He opened her mouth and couldn’t see the obstruction.  He grabbed his ball point pen and told one of the older kids to get him a clean knife.  He made a small incision in her throat and made a tracheotomy.  Gently he pushed on her diaphragm and she had a whooshing sound as the air flowed into her lungs.  Her color began to return and her eyes fluttered open.

Scott was fully sober now and remembered that he had been late because he chose to be intoxicated.  Soberness was so important.  What if he had been in an accident or had another drink.  What if he hadn’t been here in time?

The EMTs arrived and gently took Mandy and her Mom in the ambulance.  Dr. Scott called a neighbor to watch the children and got back in the car and headed to the hospital.

Today’s Lesson:

Intoxication with the things of the world will keep us from the important things.  Those of us who walk with Jesus must consider the hour.  There was a time when we could be frivolous and spend time pleasing ourselves, but the times we live in require us to be sober and focused.

This doesn’t mean that we don’t laugh and enjoy fellowship with others.  It doesn’t mean that we are like Scrooge.  What it does mean is that we are aware of who we are and more importantly Whose we are.  As we spend time in His Presence and He becomes more and more the focus of the gift of life He has given to us; we are ‘God-possessed.’

There are Mandys everywhere that aren’t breathing.  They need us to help them breathe again by introducing them to the One who loves them.  We are His hands and feet.

We don’t need a drink to relax.  We have the great Comforter to give us peace.  Peace in the Bible doesn’t mean a cessation of conflict; it means ‘whole, complete, and fully alive.’

The year 2013 requires us to be sober, focused and complete. There must be a level of preparedness and watchfulness.   This is my prayer for us all.

Focus is One of the Words for 2013

Nick loved football.  Every season he would watch every game – college and professional.  If he had time, he would go to the high school games in his community.  He focused every spare minutes on the adrenalin-laced games and heaven help his wife and children if they got between him and the television screen.  He would berate them and they would feel invisible and rejected.  He knew the names of all the players.  Soon his fanatic fixation had become the focus of his life while the neglected relationships around him quietly brought him chips and beer.  At dinner, his wife would tip-toe in and leave the hamburger and fries on the coffee table and retreat.

Eventually the marriage fell apart and Mom and Dad went their separate ways.  The children hated the divorce, but when they visited Dad, he still spent most of his time in front of the TV.  They are grown-ups now and while they love their father, they don’t feel they really know him.  He had not only been a spectator of sports that gave nothing back but he had been a spectator in his kids lives as well.  Does he have regrets?  You would have to ask him.

Today’s Lesson:

In our lives the circumstances are somewhat the same.  God is somewhat like the children in this story because He wants our undivided attention.  He promises that if we will draw near to Him, He will draw near to us.  He is waiting for us to turn off the television, the computer, the radio and to shut out all other distractions.  Father wants us to come to our quiet place and seek His face.  In our worship, we can put our focus on Him  As we listen, we will discover that everything we need, He has already provided.   It is ours for the taking just as the love the children wanted to share with their Dad was there if he had chosen to draw near.

We are to come boldly before the Father God’s throne of grace confident that as we seek Him, He will not be lost in a spectator sport or any other distraction.  We are the focus of His plan.  He wants us to be a fully functional family who focus our lives and love on Him.  We find that the Bible tells us that in His Presence is fullness of joy.  As we focus on Him, He will meet us and we will be the beneficiaries of His love and attention.

What are your focusing on?

Secret Place

When my Daddy was a boy in the 1920’s, he found what he thought was an excellent place to hide.  The old roll top desk in the parlor had a deep dark cavity where he could conceal himself from his parents.  With stealth, he secluded himself under the desk and pulled the large chair in behind securing the secret place.  He was safe from being discovered.

Soon, his parents realized they didn’t know where he was.  They began to holler for him.  “Lee-ee, Lee-ee,” they called.  No answer.  Again they called, “Lee!  Lee!”  No answer.  His Mom rang the dinner bell alarming the others on the farm.  Still no one had seen him.  She went to the old wooden wall phone and did the general ring to let the neighbors know they couldn’t find their son.  The neighbors began to show up as the concern for his welfare grew by the minute.

The young lad, Lee, was under the desk, safe and secure in his hiding place.  He was very pleased with himself.  Finally, having enjoyed his prank fully and chuckling at his own joke, he pushed the chair out and revealed himself.  His Mom grabbed him and hugged him with tears flowing down her face.  After the reunion, she realized that he had tricked her and after a severe scolding, he got a spanking that I think he never forgot the rest of his life!

As a born-from-above child of God, we have a Secret Place available to us because we belong to the One who shelters us there.   He is our refuge and our fortress and we can fully trust Him.  It is a place where we are invited to live and abide.

But when we decide that we can face the world on our own and step out from under the protection of the Most High, we face consequences that make my Daddy’s spanking seem like a wonderful reward.  It is at our own peril that we confront the enemy in our own strength.

When we are lured into temptation by doubting in God’s great love, we are greeted for a brief moment with what seems like a good deal.  Our enemy always starts with a pleasant temptation – like the fruit in the Garden of Eden.  Our enemy doesn’t show us beyond the pleasure.

For instance, the enemy may start us out with a pretty green, very tasty alcoholic drink called a Grasshopper;  there are few concoctions that can match it for taste and style.  There is a social aspect to having a drink along with a desire to fit in.  This simple beverage may lead to addiction and a devastating end.

I understand that it doesn’t happen all at once.  It is a slow and steady process that lures us in deeper and deeper until we have lost everyone and everything we held dear.  It feels like there is no way to return.  The user is hooked!

Today’s Lesson:  Regardless of the temptation, run to the Secret Place where you find safety, peace, joy, welcome, comfort, ease, guidance, and love.  It is home.  It is the biggest perk that we have as children of the Most High.

As we abide in His Presence, we trust in His timing.  When He chooses to lead us to confront the enemy, it is on His terms and we rest in His provision.  We delight in His Presence and as we participate with Him, He takes care of the problems as they arise.  What privilege we have when we dwell with Him.  No evil can befall us.  His angel guards take our part.  Thousands are no issue for Him.

Why do we doubt Him?  Why do we get too busy to settle in and find Him in the Secret Place?  Are we playing church and trying to impress others with our abilities?  Our ability is inability when we face of our enemy alone.  We are lots of noise with no victory in our life, while we are deceived into thinking we are really special.

The escape is to get into the Secret Place and rest in Him.  When we advance under His directive and act on our God-given authority, we are an unstoppable force.  The Gates of Hell cannot prevail against us!!!

Confirming Scripture:

Psalm 91

1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Deep Calls to Deep

If you love to swim, you know the exhilaration of diving into a deep pool and the freedom of swimming under the surrounding water and the cool, refreshment of the deep.  The limitation is how long you can hold your breath while longing to be able to breathe under water and continue to go deeper.  But for many, there is the fear of the water smothering them and keeping them in its arms and never letting go.

But there is a Deep that is safe and where you are free.  It is the deeper life that God has promised to those of us who draw near.  It is an exhilarating place to be.  It surrounds you with love and refuge.  It holds you and gives you the freedom to go.  But the deeps are so enticing that when we finally get there, we never want to leave.

The depths of the Lord are the ‘everlasting arms’ and the ‘secret place of the Most High.’  It is the place where we abide in Him and He in us.  We are lost in Him.

I once heard an illustration of a bottle in the ocean.  The vessel, if it is tightly capped, will float and bob on the top of the water.  It is in the ocean but it is not filled with the ocean.  A bottle, that is uncapped and open to all the ocean has for it, takes on water.  The more it takes on, the deeper it goes until it is completely filled up and lying in the deep.

And so it is when we go to the ‘Secret Place’ with open spirits, we get lost in Him and in that place, our will comes into line with His will and our way is established and our plans succeed.  Of course, by then, our plans will be His plans and our life will be His life.  His plans are perfect and He gives us a future and a hope.

Just as a person who dives into the deep and takes a deep breath, dies to this life, so it is with those of us who move into the embrace of the everlasting arms breathing in the sweet aroma of His Presence.  We die to all that seems important in this life and become one with the Father.  It is a place of romance, refreshment and direction.  It is the sacred romance.

If you haven’t taken the risk and moved to the deep, I can highly recommend it.  There is no thrill on earth, no peace in the natural realm, no relationship, and no drug that can compare.  It is the ultimate addiction.

Todays Lesson:  The way into the throne room that we have found is to lay aside all pride and agenda; put on worship music that points you to the Father, turn it up loud enough that you can’t hear what you are saying, and get alone in your prayer closet,  in your favorite chair, or on the floor.  Focus all of your attention on our great God, who He is, and His great gifts to us.  He is our Father.  He gave us His Son and His Holy Spirit.  He gave us wisdom.  They are ours if we will  but receive them.  As we come into His arms in the throne room, we enter into His Presence and we find true joy.

I invite you to risk diving into the deep right now.  Give up all that you have held on to.  All excuses, fear, guilt, shame and whatever else has kept you separated.  He isn’t mad at you and doesn’t want to punish you.  He is a Lover. He is wants you.  Enter in and share His great Love.  He who owns the deep and it’s depths is are calling for you personally!  He calls out of His great desire for fellowship and romance with you.  He’s waiting.
